Artist Talk
On Mechanisms of Laughter: For An Epidemic Resistance by Jacqueline Hoang Nguyen
followed with a Laughter Yoga workshop by Chris Nunan
Friday February 5th, 2010 at 8:00 pm

Exhibition space rum46 is pleased to host the French Canadian artist Jacqueline Hoang Nguyen and Danish yoga instructor Chris Nunan for a stimulating and entertaining artist talk. Snacks and refreshments will be served during the evening. It is free of charge and open to all. Warm welcome!

An unexplained laughter epidemic disease-phenomenon occurred in central Africa in 1962. The social malady commenced on 30th January, 1962 at a mission-run girls’ middle school in the village of Kashasha in Tanganyika (now known as Tanzania). An explosion of laughter took place over the course of six months and contaminated several hundred people in the infected community and neighbouring villages. This historical and mythical event is used here as a conceptual framework for the twenty-five channel sound installation For An Epidemic Resistance (2009) by the artist Jacqueline Hoang Nguyen.

The artist will discuss about her piece, and will also argue how laughter can be understood as a form of resistance for freeing oneself from its social self, allocating the individual and the collective to reach an ephemeral in-between state. Author and cultural theorist Marjolein’t Hart suggests in her publication Humour and Social Protest: An Introduction (2007) that humour [and laughter] is used in quite different political opportunity structures, from open democratic societies to harsh repressive regimes. Often, humour [and laughter] further the development of the collective identity of a social movement, whereas in several cases humour [and laughter] act as a powerful communication tool, serving as a true “weapon of the weak”.

The talk will be concluded by a Laughter Yoga workshop led by professional instructor Chris Nunan. The event will be conducted in English, however Chris will probably be doing his part in Danish.
